Karin Sinniger World Record Scuba Dive with Elephant

Karin Sinniger, 48, a Swiss, US and British (Hong Kong) citizen who lives in Angola and who has logged over a 1,000 dives, successfully scuba dived with an elephant near the Havelock Island, Andaman Islands, India (the 115th country she dived in), to set a world record for scuba diving in the most countries

Inappropriate behavior towards sealife

- Writting from Cozumel, Mexico - This picture below, is something I've seen while diving in Cozumel. I get very frustrated when I see people acting like this. Being a good diver means respecting sealife and especially DO NOT TRY TO HOLD ON TO A SEA TURTLE !!! I told the divemaster about what I've seen but he didn't told the "tourist" (yes that is how I call these kind of people). I also saw some divers laying down in the reef while taking pictures. I remember seeing divers in Bonaire taking multiples pictures of the same seahorse with a flash. The poor little seahorse probably got blinded for life... Anyway if you recognize yourself, try to do better next time!

The origins of the Darth Vader breathing

(Via patvader.com) Benjamin "Ben" Burtt, Jr. (born July 12, 1948) is an American sound designer who has worked on various films including: the Star Wars and Indiana Jones film series, Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978), E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982), and WALL-E (2008). He is also a film editor and director, screenwriter, and voice actor. He is most notable for creating many of the iconic sound effects heard in the Star Wars film franchise, including the "voice" of R2-D2, the lightsaber hum, the sound of the blaster guns, and the heavy-breathing sound of Darth Vader. He is personally responsible for some of the sounds heard in films. In the Star Wars series, part of R2-D2's beeps and whistles are Burtt's vocalizations, also made using an ARP 2600 synthesizer, as are some of the squawks made by the tiny holographic monsters on the Millennium Falcon spacecraft. In Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith (2005) he provides the voice for Lushros Dofine, captain of the Invisible Hand cruiser. The heavy-breathing of Darth Vader was created by recording his own breathing in an old Dacor scuba regulator.

Chilly water won't deter these divers (diving in Montreal)

(The Montreal Gazette) Most people would never associate Montreal with scuba diving, yet Montreal and the surrounding area are home to some of the best freshwater diving sites in the entire world. "Water is very popular in Quebec, when you land at Dorval you can see that everybody has a pool and you rarely see that anywhere else in the world. So people like water around here, but they just don't think about diving because they associate diving with the Caribbean," says Darcy Kieran the owner of Total Diving. For those interested in scuba diving, it's necessary to take a course and get certified by a recognized agency such as National Association of Underwater Instructors (NAUl) or Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI).

Vladimir Putin Discovers a 6th Century Artifacts While Scuba Diving

(Gizmodo) In his ongoing quest to prove what an adventurous savage he is, Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin went diving in the Black Sea. Lo and behold, after diving down a couple of meters, he happened upon two sixth century urns. Convenient. The AFP says Putin was diving for only the third time off the coast of an Ancient Greek locale and discovered the urns while in full view of the media. Television footage showed two moss-covered vases with ear-like handles sitting neatly next to each other on top of the sandy bottom as Putin swam into view. "Treasure!" a dripping wet Putin told reporters with a big grin. "They drank it all already," he added when asked if there was anything left in the jars." Upon discovery, Putin started spouting off facts about Ancient Greek pottery and how broken jars were thrown from ships, hence their resting place at the bottom of the sea. Maybe he knew what he was looking for, or is it possible that this was a total publicity stunt? (Yahoo.com) (Reuters) ~☼~ (Cyberpresse) Le premier ministre russe, Vladimir Poutine, a fait une plongée sur un site archéologique du sud de la Russie et remonté deux amphores, jouant ainsi, comme chaque été, sur son image d'aventurier, toujours devant les caméras. Il a expliqué qu'il s'agissait de sa troisième plongée et qu'il était descendu à une profondeur de deux mètres. L'ancien président russe est remonté à la surface avec deux amphores brisées, selon des images diffusées par la télévision russe. «Le chef de l'expédition archéologique a expliqué qu'elles dataient du VIe siècle après Jésus-Christ. Lorsqu'à l'époque, dans le port, on déchargeait les navires, les amphores se cassaient souvent et on les jetait à la mer», a expliqué M. Poutine. L'homme fort de la Russie visitait un site archéologique de la péninsule de Taman, dans la région de Krasnodar, où se trouvent les ruines de Phanagoria, une ville fondée à l'époque de la Grèce antique. Le premier ministre russe est un habitué de ce type de mises en scène très médiatisées, en particulier en été. Vladimir Poutine s'est déjà illustré en faisant du cheval torse nu à travers la steppe, en plongeant à bord d'un sous-marin d'exploration au fond du lac Baïkal ou encore en participant à des missions scientifiques sur les baleines et de recensement de tigres.

Today, Jacques-Yves Couseatu would have been 101 years old! To commemorate his birthday, here is the full movie "The Silent World". This Oscar and Palme d'Or-winning movie, features revolutionary images taken by Jacques-Yves Cousteau and Louis Malle in the Red Sea. ~☼~ Aujourd'hui, Jacques-Yves Cousteau aurait eu 101 ans! Pour commémorez cet événement, voici le film "The Silent World" (Le monde du silence). Ce film, récipiendaire d'un Oscar et d'un Palme d'Or, fut filmé en 1954 dans la Mer Rouge. NASA's Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory ~☼~ Le laboratoire de flottabilité neutre de la NASA

I've said that one of my dream would be to scuba dive with whales. Hopefully i'll have this chance one day. Another dream I have would be to go in space! But you know, until I win the lottery, I can still scuba dive. Which, in my opinion, should be the closest experience to be weightlessness in space. Now I've found out that NASA has one of the biggest pool in the world. The Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory (NBL) is an astronaut training facility maintained by and located at the Sonny Carter Training Facility on NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. The NBL tank itself is 202 ft. (61 m) in length, 102 ft. (31 m) wide, and 40 ft. 6 in. (12 m) deep, and contains 6.2 million gallons (23.5 million litres) of water. Divers breathe nitrox while working in the tank. Do you think they would let us dive there just for fun ? ~☼~ J'ai mentionnée sur ce blog récemment qu'un de mes rêves serait de faire de la plongée sous-marine en compagnie d'une baleine. Une autre chose que je rêvreais de pouvoir faire serait d'aller dans l'espace. Mais d'ici à ce que je gagne à la loterie, il ne me reste qu'à faire de la plongée sous-marine, qui à mon avis, est ce qui doit se rappocher le plus de l'état d'appesenteur. J'ai récemment découvert que la NASA possède l'une des plus grande piscine au monde. Le laboratoire de flottabilité neutre sert d'entraînement pour les astronautes américains de la NASA et il est situé dans le Sonny Carter Training Facility du Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center, à Houston au Texas. Il s'agit d'une piscine, la plus grande au monde, pour simuler l'état d'impesanteur et ainsi permettre l'entraînement à des sorties extravéhiculaires. Le bassin a une longueur de 202 pieds (61 mètres), une largeur de 102 pieds (31 mètres), et une profondeur de 40 pieds 6 pouces (12 mètres), pour un volume de 6,2 millions de gallons (23,5 millions de litres) d'eau. Sperm Whale Encounter

I've found this vide while surfing on Vimeo. I dream about swimming with a whale of any kind. Imagine this big "thing" swimming just right beside you. Apparently, it is illegal to approach a whale. They are protected internationally so you are not supposed to get closer than 50 meters. Except if you are a video producer ? Howard and Michele Hall are natural history filmmakers specializing in marine wildlife and marine environmental films. Together they have produced numerous films for television including several episodes of the PBS series Nature, a National Geographic Special, and the five-part PBS series Secrets of the Ocean Realm. IMAX Ocean Men ~☼~ Les plongeurs de l'extreme

Ocean Men is the fascinating story of two divers and their unique relationship to the sea. Their goal - dive deeper than anyone has ever gone before on a single breath of air. For more than 10 years, world champion freedivers Pipin Ferreras and Umberto Pelizzari have been vying for world records. This film was produced in 2001. Why am I tlking about it ? French CBC (Canada) have decided to aired  this movie ercently. I just though I would share it with you. If you like free diving, you must watch this. I am sure you can find it in stores or at your local DVD rental. For more information about this movie visit Ocean Channel's on VIMEO. ~☼~ "Les plongeurs de l'Extrême" (Ocean Men), prix du public du 7e festival international de cinéma à la Géode. aJcques Mayol et Enzo Majorca autrefois, deux apnéistes, qui partagent le même amour de la mer, vont devenir amis, puis rivaux, par excès de compétition, par divergence de point de vue. Umberto Pelizzari et Pipin Ferreras nous font partager leur passion pour l'océan, chacun à leur façon. Les images sont magnifiques, mais ne sont là que pour servir un scénario sans faille. Pourquoi je parle de ce film si il a été produit en 2001 ? C'est que Radio-canada a récemment diffusé ce  documentaire. À voir si vous êtes fan d'apnée! Le film est surement disponible en magasin ou à votre centre vidéo.

The 3-D action-thriller Sanctum follows a team of underwater cave divers on a treacherous expedition to the largest, most beautiful and least accessible cave system on Earth. In theatre one Feb 4th 2011. ~☼~ Le réalisateur Alister Grierson a travaillé sur Sanctum, un thriller d’aventure en 3D sur une équipe de plongeurs coincés dans un labyrinthe sous-marin. Le film est produit par James cameron. Sanctum 3D sortira en salles le 4 février 2010 au Canada.

Shark attack in Egypt ~☼~ Attaque de requin en Égypte

By Samer al-Atrush (AFP) Illegal feeding may have sparked a rampage by a killer shark that has terrorised holidaymakers in Egypt's popular Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh, a marine expert said on Tuesday. Meanwhile, George Burgess, who heads the International Shark Attack File, was in Sharm el-Sheikh to investigate the attacks along with a team of foreign experts. "We think someone accustomed the sharks to being fed and whoever did it has stopped," so the sharks started to look elsewhere for easy prey, Mohammed Salem, director of South Sinai Conservation, told AFP. The timing and location of three attacks in a week off Sharm el-Sheikh pointed to shark feeding which is banned in Egypt, he said.After the attacks on November 30 and December 1, government conservation experts said they captured two sharks -- an oceanic whitetip and a mako. On Tuesday General Eledkawy told journalists the mako was definitely responsible for mauling one of the tourists last week. Bite marks on the woman attacked on December 1 and an analysis of the mako's jaws all point to the shark's responsibility, he said. The oceanic whitetip appears not to have been involved in any of the attacks, the officer said, adding that at least one more shark is lurking in the deep blue waters. ~☼~ De Samer AL-ATRUSH (AFP) Des experts internationaux se trouvaient mardi dans la station balnéaire de Charm el-Cheikh en Egypte pour tenter de percer le mystère de plusieurs attaques de requins, alors que les touristes se faisaient rares sur les plages. Les experts, dont un spécialiste des attaques de requins, s'interrogent notamment sur la raison qui a poussé les squales à s'approcher si près des côtes et attaquer plusieurs touristes, dont une a perdu la vie. George Burgess, qui dirige l'International Shark Attack File, basé en Floride (sud-est des Etats-Unis), rappelle que ce type d'attaques est rare. "Le fait d'avoir plusieurs attaques, survenant l'une après l'autre dans une zone géographique limitée, est un cas de figure très rare", indique-t-il. Cela est "lié à un évènement qui les a attirés dans le secteur", poursuit-il, indiquant que l'évènement pourrait être le fait de l'homme comme celui de la nature. "Il y a quelque chose qui a modifié leur équilibre", résume-t-il. Le 30 novembre et le 1er décembre, trois touristes russes avaient été attaquées et grièvement blessées. Après ces deux attaques, les autorités avaient annoncé la capture de deux squales, un requin longimane et un requin mako, et les plages avaient été rouvertes samedi malgré l'avertissement d'une association locale selon laquelle un requin était toujours en liberté. Mardi, le général Eledkawy a affirmé que le requin mako était bien derrière l'attaque du 1er décembre. Selon lui, les traces de mâchoires sur le corps de la touriste et une analyse des dents du requin ont démontré sa responsabilité. Le requin longimane semble ne pas être impliqué dans les attaques, a-t-il ajouté, précisant qu'au moins un requin était toujours recherché. Au large, des garde-côtes égyptiens patrouillent et tentent de repérer tout danger potentiel. Charm el-Cheikh attire chaque année entre trois et quatre millions de vacanciers, et constitue l'un des piliers de l'industrie touristique égyptienne.
