Google Ocean "Street View"

(Via Techcrunch.com) EN-> Google Maps now displays StreetView-ish images of the Great Barrier Reef and popular underwater spots around Hawaii and the Philippines. As Google explained in a blog post today you can now use Google Maps to swim with a turtle, follow a manta ray or lose yourself watching the sun set over a reef. You can go diving in Maui’s Molokini crater or join snorkelers in Oahu’s Hanauma Bay. And of course all this is possible without swim lessons or sunscreen, thanks to the magic of Google Maps. Read the rest of the story on techcrunch.com or visit maps.google.com/ocean.

Sperm Whale Encounter

I've found this vide while surfing on Vimeo. I dream about swimming with a whale of any kind. Imagine this big "thing" swimming just right beside you. Apparently, it is illegal to approach a whale. They are protected internationally so you are not supposed to get closer than 50 meters. Except if you are a video producer ? Howard and Michele Hall are natural history filmmakers specializing in marine wildlife and marine environmental films. Together they have produced numerous films for television including several episodes of the PBS series Nature, a National Geographic Special, and the five-part PBS series Secrets of the Ocean Realm. This video was captured in Dominica. Feel free to visit their VIMEO CHANNEL.

Say NO to shark fin soup!

(Wikipedia) Shark fin soup (or shark's fin soup) is a Chinese soup that has been a popular item of Chinese cuisine since the Ming Dynasty, usually served at special occasions such as weddings and banquets, or as a luxury item in Chinese culture. There is controversy over the practice of shark finning which is used to source the signature ingredient for the soup. Consumption of shark fin soup has risen dramatically with the middle class becoming more affluent. Finning is named as a primary contributing factor in the global decline of many shark species. This year, Celebrate Chinese New Year with no shark fin soup. Set this pisture as your Facebook profile pic (for more information).

IMAX Ocean Men ~☼~ Les plongeurs de l'extreme

Ocean Men is the fascinating story of two divers and their unique relationship to the sea. Their goal - dive deeper than anyone has ever gone before on a single breath of air. For more than 10 years, world champion freedivers Pipin Ferreras and Umberto Pelizzari have been vying for world records. This film was produced in 2001. Why am I tlking about it ? French CBC (Canada) have decided to aired  this movie ercently. I just though I would share it with you. If you like free diving, you must watch this. I am sure you can find it in stores or at your local DVD rental. For more information about this movie visit Ocean Channel's on VIMEO.

NGEO Dawn Of The Ocean

Alien life forms lurk in our oceans, yet more than 95 percent of their depths remain unexplored. In this documentary, they journey toward the ocean floor, where eternal darkness prevails. Oceanographers search for creatures that thrive in extreme conditions scientists once believed too toxic to support any life. Photorealistic animation brings to life primitive creatures such as the armored Dunkleosteus, a shark-devouring beast. Jean-Michel Cousteau's Ocean Adventures "Humpback Ballet"

In the warm protected waters of the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary, two thirds of the North Pacific humpback whale population come to compete and mate. In this short film, Cousteau divers use rebreathers to quietly film a pod of humpback whales. Their intimate experience is featured in "America's Underwater Treasures," a two-hour program and part of the series, Jean-Michel Cousteau's Ocean Adventures shown on PBS. The crew anticipated their enormous size, but not the grace of their underwater ballet. Jean-Michel Cousteau Ocean Adventures is a co-production between Ocean Futures Society and KQED.

RMS Titanic 2010

(AFP) MONTREAL — A high-tech expedition sets out from Canada Sunday to create a detailed map of the wreckage of the Titanic, nearly a hundred years after the fabled ship sank in the Atlantic killing 1,500 people.  Organizers said the expedition would use sonar technology and high-resolution optical video and imaging to document the wreck site, in what arguably will be the most technologically-advanced scientific expedition to Titanic ever mounted.  Christopher Davino, president of RMS Titanic, said in a statement that the goal is to "create the most detailed portrait of Titanic's wreck site to date."  The team of experts, he said, "will be using some of the most advanced technology available to create a portrait of the ship unlike any that has been created before -- virtually raising Titanic and sealing her current state forever in the minds and hearts of humanity."  The mission was to set out from St John's, Newfoundland, and will provide real-time video and photo updates on Facebook and Twitter during a more than 20-day expedition.  Other images and information will be found on the mission's website, www.expeditiontitanic.com.  The Titanic, a luxury passenger ship once thought to be unsinkable, hit an iceberg on April 14, 1912 and sank in the early morning of April 15, 1912, killing 1,500 people.  After decades of searching, the wreckage of the Titanic was discovered in 1985 some four kilometers (2.5 miles) from the surface of the sea.

Leatherback Turtles Lays Nest on Klein Bonaire, Nest is Relocated to Protect Eggs

(The Bonaire Insider) On Monday, June 7th, Sea Turtle Conservation Bonaire (STCB) staff found a leatherback nest on Klein Bonaire during routine nest monitoring. Leatherback turtles are seen infrequently around Bonaire, and nesting attempts are a rare occurrence.   A leatherback, which may have been this nesting female, was sighted on June 5th, while the turtle was swimming near Klein Bonaire. It was also spotted in front of Habitat and Buddy Dive the following day. The leatherback is the largest, deepest diving, and most migratory and wide-ranging of all sea turtles. The adult leatherback can reach 4 to 8 feet in length and 500 to 2000 pounds in weight. Its shell plates are covered by firm, rubbery skin with seven longitudinal ridges. Jellyfish are the main staple of its diet, but it is also known to feed on sea urchins, squid, crustaceans, tunicates, fish, blue-green algae, and floating seaweed.Klein Bonaire is not an optimal beach for leatherback nesting. Upon, investigation STCB staff found that the nest was already flooded. Using best known practices to enhance success, the staff relocated the nest of over 100 eggs to a higher and drier site of the beach. Adult female leatherbacks require sandy nesting beaches backed with vegetation and sloped sufficiently so the crawl to dry sand is not too far. The preferred beaches have proximity to deep water and generally rough seas. The last time a leatherback nesting activity was recorded on Bonaire was in 2008, when a female leatherback intended to lay her nest at Cai. The crawl was checked but eggs were not found by STCB staff. This kind of opportunistic nesting can happen at the end of the leatherback nesting season, when these animals are returning from their nesting homes to their feeding homes and suddenly they feel the urge to lay one last nest. They look for the nearest beach and try their best to lay a nest.  (Source:  Sea Turtle Conservation Bonaire)

Bonne fête Capitaine COUSTEAU !

Jacques-Yves Cousteau was born on June 11, 1910, in Saint André de Cubzac, Gironde in France. One hundred years later, we are celebrating the anniversary of the man who made an indelible impression on our planet and its oceans.  When Captain Cousteau and his crew set sail on Calypso to explore the world, no one knew yet about the effects of pollution on marine ecosystems, of over-exploitation on resources and of manmade destruction on coastal zones.  The adventures of Calypso were captured on film and drew the public’s attention to the ecological disasters caused by human negligence. Captain Cousteau, through his work and his life, was a leader in environmental awareness. He left it to the Cousteau Society and Equipe Cousteau, the two not-for-profit organizations he founded, to continue his mission.
