HECTOMETER - World Record

This is the visual poem of William Trubridge's world record freedive to 100 meters (one hectometer, basically one football field length and back) in order to bring light to the plight of the world's smallest cetacean, the Hector's Dolphin of New Zealand. With one breath of air and diving without weights, fins or any propulsive assistance, William descended to 101 meters in the waters of Dean's Blue Hole, Bahamas, the deepest blue hole in the world. This short documentary of the record attempts to transmit what it is like to freedive deep beneath the surface, and how we can return to explore our potential as an aquatic mammal in the search to help our endangered cousins of the seas.

The origins of the Darth Vader breathing

(Via patvader.com) Benjamin "Ben" Burtt, Jr. (born July 12, 1948) is an American sound designer who has worked on various films including: the Star Wars and Indiana Jones film series, Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978), E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982), and WALL-E (2008). He is also a film editor and director, screenwriter, and voice actor. He is most notable for creating many of the iconic sound effects heard in the Star Wars film franchise, including the "voice" of R2-D2, the lightsaber hum, the sound of the blaster guns, and the heavy-breathing sound of Darth Vader. He is personally responsible for some of the sounds heard in films. In the Star Wars series, part of R2-D2's beeps and whistles are Burtt's vocalizations, also made using an ARP 2600 synthesizer, as are some of the squawks made by the tiny holographic monsters on the Millennium Falcon spacecraft. In Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith (2005) he provides the voice for Lushros Dofine, captain of the Invisible Hand cruiser. The heavy-breathing of Darth Vader was created by recording his own breathing in an old Dacor scuba regulator.

Skyfall, the next James Bond, will have an underwater fight!

EN-> (Via Gizmodo.com) Skyfall, the next James Bond movie, is going to have some serious underwater fights. They have been filmed in the only underwater stage in the planet, a 20-by-10-meter pool that is almost 20 feet deep and contains 317,006 gallons (1.2 million liters) of water. The whole mechanics on how they prepare and film theses scenes—using high quality underwater sparkers, underwater monitors and dive buddies, so nobody has to go up to the surface for hours—is quite fascinating. And it's always cool to see Daniel Craig doing the stunts.

Google Ocean "Street View"

(Via Techcrunch.com) EN-> Google Maps now displays StreetView-ish images of the Great Barrier Reef and popular underwater spots around Hawaii and the Philippines. As Google explained in a blog post today you can now use Google Maps to swim with a turtle, follow a manta ray or lose yourself watching the sun set over a reef. You can go diving in Maui’s Molokini crater or join snorkelers in Oahu’s Hanauma Bay. And of course all this is possible without swim lessons or sunscreen, thanks to the magic of Google Maps. Read the rest of the story on techcrunch.com or visit maps.google.com/ocean.

Vladimir Putin Discovers a 6th Century Artifacts While Scuba Diving

(Gizmodo) In his ongoing quest to prove what an adventurous savage he is, Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin went diving in the Black Sea. Lo and behold, after diving down a couple of meters, he happened upon two sixth century urns. Convenient. The AFP says Putin was diving for only the third time off the coast of an Ancient Greek locale and discovered the urns while in full view of the media. Television footage showed two moss-covered vases with ear-like handles sitting neatly next to each other on top of the sandy bottom as Putin swam into view. "Treasure!" a dripping wet Putin told reporters with a big grin. "They drank it all already," he added when asked if there was anything left in the jars." Upon discovery, Putin started spouting off facts about Ancient Greek pottery and how broken jars were thrown from ships, hence their resting place at the bottom of the sea. Maybe he knew what he was looking for, or is it possible that this was a total publicity stunt?

The Sharkman

(CBS News) There is no animal that we fear more and understand less than the Great White Shark. In part because it's so hard to get near to them, studying great whites hasn't been easy. But there is one man who has spent his life getting closer to great whites, more often, than anyone else. His name is Mike Rutzen and in South Africa, where he lives, he's known simply as "The Sharkman." What he's discovered about these predators will surprise you: Far from being mindless killing machines Rutzen believes great whites are smart, curious, and not ou to kill humans, and as we reported back in 2010, he's willing to risk his life to prove it. Rutzen and CNN's Anderson Cooper took a boat ride to look for a great white Rutzen could swim with. That's right, swim with. Before he gets in the water, he needs to find a great white that is both calm and curious, a shark he refers to as a "player."

Cousteau Divers

The Cousteau Divers participative science program makes YOU an active agent of the study and protection of the oceans. With a very simple methods, you record your observations of marine life during your dive and then upload them on a site. This survey changes the way you dive as you open your mind to the surrounding ecosystem as you realize just how everything down there is interconnected. You are hunting for indicator species like a detective searching for clues of the health of the dive site. As you upload your survey, you are helping them gather a near real-time diagnosis of the ocean's health! This will allow them to visualize and respond to problems as they arise, targeting expeditions to help solve them, and inviting on board our best members as a reward for their participation. Cousteau Divers is also a large program of participatory science based on the creation of a network of divers. Affiliated diving centers are actively involved in scientific programs to monitor and conserve the marine biodiversity all around the World. Visit COUSTEAU DIVERS website and join a community of divers involved in the protection of our Water Planet.
