Inappropriate behavior towards sealife

- Writting from Cozumel, Mexico - This picture below, is something I've seen while diving in Cozumel. I get very frustrated when I see people acting like this. Being a good diver means respecting sealife and especially DO NOT TRY TO HOLD ON TO A SEA TURTLE !!! I told the divemaster about what I've seen but he didn't told the "tourist" (yes that is how I call these kind of people). I also saw some divers laying down in the reef while taking pictures. I remember seeing divers in Bonaire taking multiples pictures of the same seahorse with a flash. The poor little seahorse probably got blinded for life... Anyway if you recognize yourself, try to do better next time!

We got engaged underwater in Cozumel!

It's the most original way to ask your beloved! No doubt she said yes!

I'm posting this in his memory ---FR--- J'ai du laisser partir mon chien il y a quelques semaines. Miscou a vécu presque 14 ans. (More pics here twistedsifter.com)

Sperm Whale Encounter

I've found this vide while surfing on Vimeo. I dream about swimming with a whale of any kind. Imagine this big "thing" swimming just right beside you. Apparently, it is illegal to approach a whale. They are protected internationally so you are not supposed to get closer than 50 meters. Except if you are a video producer ? Howard and Michele Hall are natural history filmmakers specializing in marine wildlife and marine environmental films. Together they have produced numerous films for television including several episodes of the PBS series Nature, a National Geographic Special, and the five-part PBS series Secrets of the Ocean Realm. This video was captured in Dominica. Feel free to visit their VIMEO CHANNEL.

Liquid Image Camera-Mask NOT!

(By Jesus Diaz, Gizmodo) While Liquid Image Scuba Series HD320 is a huge jump over their previous toy-mask—reaching 115 feet and capable of capturing 720p video and 5 megapixel photos—didn't anyone tell these people that one of the first rules of scuba diving is not to have objects protruding out of your personal space beyond your tank and BCD? Apparently not. In other words, if you are serious about getting good video or photographs underwater, forget about gimmicks like this and get external equipment. It will be more flexible and safe. PRODUCT PAGE

Giant manta caught on video stealing diver's expensive camera rig

(RP : GrindTV.com) A giant Pacific manta displayed some clever moves recently when it made like a purse snatcher and swiped an unsuspecting videographer's expensive gear before stealing away into the dark nighttime waters off Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. The manta eventually released the equipment almost directly under their boat. It was retrieved undamaged.

DIVETRIP #12 : Curaçao N. A. 2010

We were firstly attracted to Curacao because we had to make a stop to the Island in order to get to Bonaire. We've also seen a couple of nice ads in Sport Diver Magazine specially the Historic Area of Willemstad, Inner City and Harbour, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We stayed at the Lion's Dive & Beach Resort, which has nice rooms and a nice setup with a dive shop just beside called Ocean Encouters. To be honest, it wasn't our best trip. Everywhere you go, staff is lazy and i wouldn’t walk in the streets at night. Especially downtown Willemstad. We heard about "night life" but all we could find is a smoky casino full of pathetic compulsive players. Nothing glamorous at all. We've tried some beach clubs and restaurants beside the Lion's Dive and all I remember was big cockroaches and rats running on the floor. They say it's normal as there is no wall but whatever... That being said, scuba diving had nothing special either except if you wish to dive beside an oil platform. Very trendy these days. Actually, there is a big oil refinery right in the middle of the island. Imagine having a big chimney in the background while drinking your margarita. We've also done the dolphin dive. It was cool but not enough for your money, you get to swim with one dolphin in an open sea environment and the encounter last only for 25 minutes. Some people just don't understand when you tell them not too touch sea life. But anyway it was memorable even after we saw the aquarium and noticed how sea life was used to make money. I was told by a friend, who knows people who take care of dolphins, that in captivity, a dolphin does not live for too long. They actually die very young. Thanks for the experience ANNIE! We will soon post a video about our trip. In the meantime, here are some of our best shots! Enjoy!

Leatherback Turtles Lays Nest on Klein Bonaire, Nest is Relocated to Protect Eggs

(The Bonaire Insider) On Monday, June 7th, Sea Turtle Conservation Bonaire (STCB) staff found a leatherback nest on Klein Bonaire during routine nest monitoring. Leatherback turtles are seen infrequently around Bonaire, and nesting attempts are a rare occurrence.   A leatherback, which may have been this nesting female, was sighted on June 5th, while the turtle was swimming near Klein Bonaire. It was also spotted in front of Habitat and Buddy Dive the following day. The leatherback is the largest, deepest diving, and most migratory and wide-ranging of all sea turtles. The adult leatherback can reach 4 to 8 feet in length and 500 to 2000 pounds in weight. Its shell plates are covered by firm, rubbery skin with seven longitudinal ridges. Jellyfish are the main staple of its diet, but it is also known to feed on sea urchins, squid, crustaceans, tunicates, fish, blue-green algae, and floating seaweed.Klein Bonaire is not an optimal beach for leatherback nesting. Upon, investigation STCB staff found that the nest was already flooded. Using best known practices to enhance success, the staff relocated the nest of over 100 eggs to a higher and drier site of the beach. Adult female leatherbacks require sandy nesting beaches backed with vegetation and sloped sufficiently so the crawl to dry sand is not too far. The preferred beaches have proximity to deep water and generally rough seas. The last time a leatherback nesting activity was recorded on Bonaire was in 2008, when a female leatherback intended to lay her nest at Cai. The crawl was checked but eggs were not found by STCB staff. This kind of opportunistic nesting can happen at the end of the leatherback nesting season, when these animals are returning from their nesting homes to their feeding homes and suddenly they feel the urge to lay one last nest. They look for the nearest beach and try their best to lay a nest.  (Source:  Sea Turtle Conservation Bonaire)

The Story Of A Lost Camera’s Adventure

A guy have found a camera and Ikelite waterproof housing washed ashore in Key West, FL. Pictures dated from November, 2009 indicate it floated all the way from Aruba over a period of 6 months. Two months in to the journey, this sea turtle came across it and probably tried to eat it, turning the camera on and recording himself. The owner has been located in Aruba and confirmed he lost it while diving off Aruba on November 11, 2009. The last thing the owner did was take a video, so the camera was in video mode. This incident with the turtle ocurred on January 15, 2010. The camera washed ashore in Key West on May 16, 2010 covered in growth (CLICK HERE to read the reste of this amazing story).

DIVETRIP #11 : PADI Rescue Diver, Sacacomie, Canada 2010

We've just got certified PADI Rescue Diver! We will feel more secure next time we will dive. It snowed while we were doing our certification and water temperature was 41F.

DIVETRIP #10 : Roatan, Honduras 2010

Hello again! So here are some pictures of our trip to Roatan. We stayed at the Fantasy Island Dive Resort from January 7 to 14, 2010. We've seen their ads in magazine, read articles about it and also heard from other divers. Comments were lukewarm. Someone told us the Hotel was poorly maintain. We had no expectation whatsoever and we had what we paid for. It's a 3 stars Hotel . Food is ok, room would need a little refreshment but the setup is just awesome. They have a quay where boats leave 3 times a day. You can just leave your equipment there securely. No need to carry your gear back and forth from your Hotel room to the quay. The Hotel is located at a 5-10 minutes boat ride from the best diving sites of the Island (click here or a map and check out diving sites #53 to #60). It was our first time with our new INON WIDE LENS and I'll let you see the result for yourself. If we would go back we would land on the Island and NOT in La Ceiba. ~☼~ Bonjour!

National Geographic Photographer Meets Deadly Leopard Seal

National Geographic photographer Paul Nicklen was in Antarctica to capture shots of leopard seals. One approached him, jaws wide and ready for biting...and if you haven't heard the rest of the story yet, you need to watch this brief clip. I'm not man enough to dive into freezing waters to document the lives of animals that could rip off my head without a second thought, but I'm sure glad that YouTube exists so I can sit here in my underwear and enjoy the experience vicariously.

DIVETRIP #8 : Padi Dry suit Sacacomie Canada 2009

We've decided to take our PADI DRY SUIT because water is cold in Canada. Could be usefull for diving Les Escoumins or maybe for a Ice Dive this winter ? I have to say that I didn't enjoyed my certification that much. I rented a neopren dry suit which was wet... Yuk!
